Despite being ready since early April, because of almost constant rain we were forced to wait and only started spring planting on April 22nd. This is the same day as last year, making it the second time in a row we have started this late. As a matter of fact, two days later, another episode of rain arrived that turned into snowfall in the higher altitudes where we plant which compelled us to wait another two days for the snow to melt before continuing.
Our first planting activity is actually replanting. We have started a second replanting in Jrashen 1, our very first area where we started planting in 2021. Jrashen is a difficult area where the scorching sun in the summer and the sometimes strong winds make it difficult for trees to grow. In 2024, we replanted 102.000 trees in that area and, because of more demanding standards, requiring our workers to dig deeper and wider holes, the success rate climbed to 90%. However, we still want to plant another 40.000 seedlings in that area, in order to have a dense forest covering an area as big as possible.
A Season of Renewal
Spring is one of the most critical periods for reforestation. It is in this period that we can plant pine trees successfully. Because of the nature of the seedlings they become dormant very late making them unsuitable to plant in Fall. Favorable soil moisture and moderate temperatures create ideal conditions for young pines to establish strong root systems in the spring.
Over the coming weeks, we hope to plant approximately 200.000 trees across 75 hectares. Soon, we will continue our afforestation works in Lernajour 5 and in Dzorashen. Let’s pray that there will be no rain for the next two weeks to allow the workers to do the work.
