First results of the FORACCA project implementation
First results of the FORACCA project implementation
This year, we successfully implemented our first year actions within the FORACCA (Forest Restoration and Climate Change in Armenia) project co-funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

The project aims to support reforestation efforts on community lands and climate-resilient development in Armenia. For this objective, we planted 142 ha of new forest in the Lernajur 4 afforestation area: 60 ha were financed by SDC within the framework of the FORACCA project. The grant co-financed also the maintenance of 70 ha of newly planted forests in Lernajur 1&2 - an operation of crucial importance for the healthy growth of the young trees. Only native forest tree species were planted, like oak, pine, maple, birch, etc, and shrubs, for the creation of a sustainable forest ecosystem.

The cooperation with SDC was also instrumental in further empowering the Forest Alliance of Armenia. It allowed the Alliance to hire a secretary, and we will soon have a website, for a better presentation of the objectives and needs of the reforestation sector.

Overall, we planted 722,482 trees in 2025, covering 236 hectares in four afforestation sites in three regions of Armenia: Lori, Shirak and Gegharkunik. In the coming years, we will closely monitor the growth of these young trees and do maintenance for the best possible results.

The “Forest Restoration and Climate Change in Armenia” (FORACCA) project is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and co-funded by the four implementing organizations under the Forest Alliance of Armenia, including Shen NGO, Armenia Tree Project NGO (ATP), My Forest Armenia NGO (MFA), and Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC). The project is implemented in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow, and Landscape Research (WSL) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)․
