Tree Planting with Youri Djorkaeff
The famous French football star, Youri Djorkaeff, forward striker of the French team that won the FIFA World Cup in 1998, selected My Forest Armenia to plant trees and thereby underlining the importance of protecting and expanding forests. Youri is now CEO of the FIFA Foundation, he was on a week-long pilot programme in Armenia to introduce 100 children from under-privileged communities to the beautiful world of football.
Understanding the importance of forests and planting trees was part of the training of the children. On Saturday May 8th, an event at the Djrvezh forest was organised with Armen Melikbekyan, president of the Armenian Football Federation.
Did you know that FIFA is composed of 211 national football federations? That’s right, more countries than in the UN!
Armen and Youri are both convinced defenders of the environment, and it was a breath of fresh air to discover their commitments to undertake concrete actions to help Nature. Let us hope that all football fans will understand and support the protection of existing forests and the creation of new ones. If we can tie the wonderful world of football with the wonderful world of forests, this would be a strong message for the planet and for all of humanity.
